California's Proposition 8 Passed in November of 2008 setting a ban on same-sex marriage. It recently came back into the spotlight when Carrie placed first runner-up at the Miss USA pageant.
California, and the US, has had a long history of proposistions aimed at tackling the same sex marriage topic. Propostition 22 and the famous Prop 8 both set legislation in California banning same sex marriage. Prop 22 was reversed and Prop 8 is constantly challenged.
